da cassino: As reported by CalcioMercato, Arsenal were interested in signing Napoli forward Dries Mertens during the summer transfer window.
What’s the story?
da realsbet: The Gunners didn’t do a whole lot of spending before the start of this season but did strengthen their attack with the acquisition of Alexandre Lacazette. It seems though that Wenger was interested in bringing another striker to the Emirates in the summer.
CalcioMercato say the Arsenal boss was interested in bringing Belgian international Dries Mertens to the club, before he eventually signed a contract extension at his current club Napoli.
However, the outlet report the London club could still make a move for the prolific goalscorer at the end of the season, due to a £26.5m transfer clause in his new contract.
What can he offer?
While Mertens doesn’t possess the long-term potential of regular Arsenal signings, he is 30 years old after all, he would offer a significant goal threat to Arsenal’s attack which could be vital if they can hang on to established stars like Alexis Sanchez.
The Belgian scored a magnificent 34 goals in all competitions for the Italian outfit last term, including five in the UEFA Champions League. That’s an outstanding return at the highest level and something that could be well worth the cash at the reported £26.5m.
Is he the man that can help Gunners fans forget all about Sanchez and Ozil?
