da bet7: As a Liverpool fan at this moment in time, life does seem rather grim. In order to partially alleviate my mind of the worries concerning the future of my club, I have tried my utmost to try and seek any positives. Any positives at all. Although questions marks persist over the Anfield futures of Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano, at least I can console myself with the knowledge that Alberto Aquilani is staying put on Merseyside.
Speaking to Italian newspaper Leggo, Aquilani stated that “I am staying at Liverpool to make up for many things. I have finally recovered from my ankle injury. Juve have approached me in the past and now I’m reading of their interest, but I really don’t know anything about it.”
In a time where many of Liverpool’s players are refusing to commit their futures to the club, Aquilani’s words are like a breath of fresh air. The Italian playmaker has not had an easy first year in England, having joined Liverpool immediately prior to a period of serious unrest and tumult at the club. Aquilani joined Liverpool after the club had finished second in the Premier League, under the premise that they would be mounting a serious title challenge – this clearly did not happen.
Aquilani’s failure to feature regularly within the Liverpool first XI ultimately cost him his place in Italy’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, so few could’ve blamed the player for wanting to leave. Due to his absences, Aquilani has been unfairly labelled as a ‘flop’ by many within the English media. Indeed, with the player’s reputation still intact in his homeland, Aquilani could’ve joined Juventus and re-established his career in Italy (although a move to the Bianconeri may have been a case of jumping out of the fire and into the frying pan).
Although injuries have restricted his outings for Liverpool so far, Aquilani’s form so far suggests that he is a quality player who will be a vital component of Liverpool’s side for the next few seasons. A return of six assists and one goal from just nine Premier League starts exacerbates this assertion.
Aside from Spanish custodian Pepe Reina, few Liverpool players have sought to publicly appease the worries of the club’s fans. Whilst the words of Aquilani do not provide the same level of relief as such words from the mouths of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, they do help us fans understand that quality players are still committed to the Liverpool cause.
